Jan 31 at Cornwall Library"The Lady With A Dog"
A Soviet-era adaptation of a Chekhov short story. In his lectures on Russian literature at Cornell, Vladimir Nabokov called the story the greatest ever written, and Ingmar Bergman dubbed the film one of the greatest adaptations. That’s a lot of praise for a very small but very romantic, and at the same time tragic, work about a roué who finds himself against all odds truly falling in love, and a simple young woman who, against all odds as well, dares to betray her upbringing, her society, her values and, of course, her husband. The story of this pair comes close to breaking not only their hearts but ours as well. Feb 14th
