Minutes to Park and Recreation Commission Meeting on 12/5/00
Tom B., Dierdre F., Brian K., Brian L., and guest Norma Lake were present.
Meeting moved to CCS due to a meeting already taking place at the W. Cornwall Firehouse.
Norma Lake came to speak to the Commission about posting our agenda and minutes on the Cornwall Website. Other boards use the site for this purpose, and she wants to know if we’d participate. The Park and Rec. Chair would review the minutes before they get posted. Commission members felt we could better serve the weekend community by using the website. Brian K. asked if previous months are archived, Norma replied that they are. Park and Rec. expressed interest and enthusiasm in using the Website.
Minutes from previous meeting to be accepted at the next meeting in Jan.
Soccer: We are part of the Berkshire United Regional Soccer club who is looking for seed money for various start up costs. The board needs to consider what Cornwall can contribute, vote to be held at next meeting. Brian K. advised that we agree to cover costs from Cornwall kids who participate. We could contribute $100 initially.
Christmas Crafts- very successful, and should be done again.
Game Night-we’ll set dates in Jan. for Jan/Feb. We’ll use the Website and flyers to promote it better.
Ski Wee-Brian L. says we need volunteers. A second appeal will go out through CCS. Brian K. suggested we talk to PTA and call the class parents to get leads. Ski Wee starts on Jan. 4,2001.
Carol Sing-Deirdre put roadside sign up. Brian K., Brian L. will come. Sharon will do hot chocolate and candy canes; Carla will do cookies. Brian L. called John Hubbard about the Tree lights. Dierdre will call Commission members to remind them to be there at 5:15.
Basketball-Going well. 5/6th grade boys have 8 or 9 kids on the Traveling Team. First game is on Sat. 12/9 at 2:30 in Sharon. Brian L. made initial calls to the Northwest Basketball League to get us started. Tom Baird is the Head Coach, Greg Robinson is the assistant. There is a 12 game schedule and tournament. The team practices on Thurs. from 5:00 – 6:30 or 7:00. Brian L. will get 2 basketballs and scorebook for the team. The team may also practice on Mondays for now.
5/6th grade girls are coached by Bill Gold and practice on Tues. from 5:00-6:30. The girls need uniforms. Bairds bought shirts for the boys team, and Tom said he’ll get them for the girls also. Park and Rec. will supply shorts.
2nd, 3rd, 4th grade will start in January, the board decided. Brian L. will work out the details. Brian L. will check out existing basketballs/inventory.
New Business:
The first Thurs. and 3rd Tuesday of the month will be Building Committee meeting. Park and Rec. should have a representative to communicate our needs of playing fields and storage.
Bus Trip: Cancelled due to lack of response. There were many additional things going on that day: gym vote craft fair, etc… we’ll discuss rescheduling.
2001 Meetings: Calendar for 2001 meetings to be voted on at Jan. meeting. That meeting will be on Jan. 2, 2001.
Babe Ruth: Tom and Brian L. attended a meeting in Sharon about a Region 1 Babe Ruth league. Can we get enough kids for our own team, or farm out Cornwall kids to other Towns. Brian L. will pursue this.
