MINUTES OF THE CORNWALL BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING
HELD ON THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2008 AT 5:00 P.M. AT
CORNWALL CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL

Board members present were: Barbara Gold, Chairperson; Phil Hart, Irene Hurlburt, Wynne Kavanagh, and Thomas K. Levine. Becky Hurlburt was absent. Others present were Patricia Chamberlain, Superintendent of Schools; and Bob Kanehl, CCS teacher and principal intern, standing in for the principal.

Mrs. Gold called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.

On a motion by Mrs. Hurlburt, seconded by Mr. Hart, the Agenda was approved as presented.

On a motion by Mrs. Kavanagh, seconded by Mr. Hart, the minutes of the March 20^th meeting were approved.

The January, February, March 3^rd quarter budget report was reviewed.

There was no Board of Finance report.

Mr. Hart reported that the Region One Board recommended sending the FY2009 $13,886,000 (5.36% increase) budget to referendum. He mentioned that Dave Bayersdorder will be stepping down from his post as Region One Athletic Director to go back to full-time teaching. The board will consider putting money in the FY2010 budget for a contingency fund. Graduation will be held on June 18^th at 6:30 p.m. The Long-range Planning Team will be holding forums in all Region One towns over the next two months (Cornwall – Friday, May 30 at 7:00 p.m. at CCS).

The ABC Committee will meet next week in Kent.

Ms. Chamberlain – Superintendent’s Report

• Distributed CAPSS (Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents) legislative updates

• All citizens in Region One are urged to participate in community forums and to take the online survey: www.region1schools.org - go to “Region One Schools” on the left side of the home page and scroll down to “HVRHS” – locate the online survey link under the text “Long Range Planning”.

• Distributed the Superintendent’s Annual Report for Regional School District #1. Cornwall mentions are the boys and girls Region One Soccer Champions, and Lee H. Kellogg and Cornwall students raising funds for the Mekele School for the Blind in Ethiopia.

Mr. Kanehl for Dr. Fitzgibbons – Principal’s Report

• Parent Conferences will be held on April 23^rd and 24^th.

• The K-4 Spring Concert will be held on April 24^th and the 5^th-8^th Concert on May 21^st.

• The PTA will sponsor a book fair in the Gathering Room April 21^st through 25^th.

The Standing Building Committee received three written quotations for repair of the flat roof.

On a motion by Mr. Levine, seconded by Mrs. Kavanagh, the Board accepted the recommendation of the Standing Building Committee to accept the quote from Royal Construction Company to replace the flat roof at Cornwall Consolidated School for $32,000, with a 20-year guarantee.

Work can begin in two weeks.

Mrs. Gold, Mrs. Kavanagh, and Mr. Levine agreed to serve on the Bradford Scholarship Committee.

On a motion by Mrs. Kavanagh, seconded by Mrs. Hurlburt, the Board agreed to send a final budget of $3,804,988 to the Board of Finance.
