The Cornwall Housing Corporation is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant of $1,505,800 to construct 10 units of affordable elderly housing on its 5-acre parcel of land on Route 7 in Cornwall Bridge. This award follows a long and complicated application process, and the CHC is grateful for the hard work, professionalism and sympathetic support of its consultants, Housing Enterprises, Inc. of Enfield CT.

The HUD grant is designed to cover the major portion of the project costs, including land acquisition, site preparation, project construction and permitting. The HUD grant will also provide ongoing rent subsidies so that the occupants will only be required to pay rent equal to 30% of their income with HUD will making up the difference in the project’s operating costs. With preliminary help from its generous supporters, grants from the Cornwall Foundation and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), a national organization dedicated to building sustainable communities, the CHC has already invested considerable funds of its own to buy the land and to perform preliminary tests, surveys, engineering and mapping

In addition, an application for State Tax Credits from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA) has been sought in order to acquire additional funding to assist with the site design and construction costs while maintaining the site’s affordability. This application was submitted on July 1, and award announcements are expected around September 1, 2010.

There are numerous tasks ahead of the Corporation before any shovel hits the dirt. An early step will be a public meeting to share information and seek suggestions. This will be scheduled soon in Cornwall, with advance notice provided through newspapers, posters and the Cornwall website.
